1. Core Purpose of the Chamfer

  • Guidance & Protection:​ Guides the sealing lip smoothly over sharp edges (e.g., cylinder port, piston rod end) during installation, preventing cutting, nicking, or rolling of the lip.

    • Standard:​ Similarly, a 15°-20° chamfer​ is needed. It must be long enough​ to ensure the U-Seal's inner lip is fully guided onto the rod surface before it encounters threads or grooves. Threads on the rod end must be recessed below the chamfer's minor diameter.

  • Angle (α):​ Most common is 15°-20°. Harder or larger cross-section seals may require a gentler angle (e.g., 20°-30°). A 90° sharp edge or a small radius is strictly prohibited.
  • Length (C):​ Generally not less than 2mm, or at least 1.5 times the seal's cross-section height to ensure sufficient guidance.
  • Surface Finish:​ The chamfer surface should be smoother than Ra 0.8 μmhighly polished, free of machining marks and burrs—matching the finish of the main sealing surface (cylinder bore, rod surface).
  • Shape:​ Must be a continuous, uniform slope, not a stepped or irregular profile.

4. Related Important Considerations

  1. Installation Tools:​ For mass production or difficult access, dedicated installation sleeves or tapered guide tools​ are highly recommended to provide a perfect lead-in surface.
  2. Groove Design:​ The groove entry edges should also be slightly rounded or deburred in conjunction with the chamfer. Groove dimensions must follow the seal manufacturer's specifications precisely.
  3. Material Compatibility:​ Chamfer dimensions may need adjustment based on seal material (e.g., NBR, FKM, PU). Harder materials often require gentler chamfers.
  4. Lubrication:Always lubricate​ the seal lips and chamfer surface with compatible grease or oil before installation to reduce friction.

  • Pre-Installation Check:​ Feel all chamfered areas by hand to ensure they are smooth. Visual inspection with magnification is helpful.
  • Use Guides:​ Invest in or fabricate simple guide tools if possible.
